Mom, dad, and all our guests here today.
Dad, I still remember your speech at my wedding. You said,"A wedding is something wonderful – but being able to grow old together is a miracle!"
At that time I thought, pfft, it can't be that difficult! Why overdramatize it and call it a miracle?
Today, however, I understand what you meant by that. A miracle is something that shocks us in amazement. And that's how I feel about you, Mom and Dad, today: shocked, in the best of ways. You sit there together, having spent more than 50 years in each others' company, and look at the life you've had together. There's ups and downs, sunny and rainy days, worries and hardships, but also happiness and joy.
It's amazing! And yet, equally amazing is how quickly the years have passed, and how big the family has grown: children, grandchildren, even great-grandchildren here today. Your house is more than packed when we're all over for holiday dinners. Without you, we would any of us be today?
It really is a miracle: 50 years of love, care, and mutual respect. But how has it been for you? How hard or easy has it been? Us kids know a version of your lives, but even then, we didn't see or understand everything. You were just our parents: always there, always reliable, always loving.
But, talking to the rest of the gang, we've come up with a few choice memories of you two together, moments that affected us and our choices as we became adults, moments that shaped the way we understand relationships and love and how to look after one another. Today's my turn, to give my version of a wedding speech, but this time for you two....
